How To Play The Viola For Beginners

Playing the Viola for Beginners: The Essentials Steps to Begin the Learning Process

The first step in learning how to play the viola for beginners is to take lessons or classes. It is the most expedient way because there is no short cut in learning a wonderful musical instrument like the viola. The cheapest way to do it is to enrol in a music class, and for young children the best way is through their elementary schools. Most of the time viola lessons are offered starting in the fifth grade. Those who are older could choose to enroll in orchestra programs available in High School, College or University. Another alternative is to look for teachers providing lessons near you.

The second step is to learn the parts of the viola. The oval piece of wood near the bottom is the chin rest. The piece of wood attached to the chin rest is the tailpiece. The four gold, black or silver circles that are attached to the tailpiece are the fine tuners and helps to tune the musical equipment. The holes in the front of the viola are called the f holes and needed to produce beautiful music. The bridge holds up the four strings of the viola. The fingerboard, neck and scroll are other important components of the viola.

The third step is to learn how to handle the instrument. Begin the process by placing the chin rest under your jaw. Hold the viola parallel to the floor and make sure your wrist is straight against the instrument.

The fourth step is to become familiar with the different styles of play. Learn to play the pizzicato by plucking the string using one finger. Learn to play the arco by using the bow.

The fifth step is to become familiar with the strings. The thickest string is the C String; the second thickest string is the G String; the second thinnest string is the D String; and finally, the thinnest string is the A String.

The sixth step requires the use of a tuner because this critical step is the time when the beginner learns fingering. The tuner will help the student determine if he or she has the correct fingering because the tuner will provide the feedback.
